Life support machines, for example, fall into this category. An electrical engineer would design circuits, evaluate loads, and pair life support machines with emergency generators. Lights, too, need to remain on, but can function at a dimmer level in a crisis, so electrical engineers would design the grid to accommodate this situation.

What Qualifies an Electrical Engineer? 

Electrical engineers start out by attending a college or university and obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree. Some continue to earn a Master’s of Engineering, but a bachelor’s degree provides sufficient educational background.

After college and upon successfully completing the Fundamentals in Engineering Exam, they become an Engineer in Training. Next, they work directly under an experienced electrical engineer. Each state requires a different amount of time as an Engineer in Training before earning certification as a Professional Engineer. However, not all engineering positions require a Professional Engineer certification, and some electrical engineers will not have the Professional Engineer designation.
