Bay Lake Retirement is a retirement facility in Virginia Beach. They offer memory care and independent and assisted living in a stunning, modern community. Residents enjoy superior services and organized social activities. 

The Challenge

Bay Lake has created a legacy in the assisted living space. Even though the community was well-taken care of for over 25 years, the time had come to update the facility. When choosing a contractor, Bay Lake Retirement’s decision had to match their reputation for excellence.  

Searching for a contractor

Bay Lakes had heard about Carlton Building Services’ work, and that our team was particularly skilled at working while residents lived within an assisted living facility. Thanks to this reputation, they hired our team for renovations on first and second floor common spaces. Before this project, they’d also worked with our team on renovating residents’ rooms.

Upstairs, downstairs

the project had many moving pieces and spanned two floors. On the first floor, we added a built-in desk to the lobby, salvaged paneling in the dining room, and renovated two side waiting areas, three bathrooms, a game room, and offices. 

For the second floor, we renovated hallways, created a computer room, a hair salon, activities room, and more offices. While our team was able to complete most of the work, we also collaborated with subcontractors, all of which were vetted by our team and determined to be masters of their craft. 

Last minute changes

About two months into the project, Bay Lake approached us and asked if we could condense the project into two months. A moved-up deadline always creates some stress, but fortunately, our team has a robust planning and coordination system that made the time crunch a reality. 

Minimal disruptions, maximum communication

While these renovations took place, residents lived in Bay Lake. Our team has mastered the art of minimal disruption, meaning there was little impact on residents’ lives. 

At the same time, our team was respectful and communicative. With residents, this looked like helping them with groceries and being friendly faces in the community. For Bay Lake, this transparency equated to weekly updates, photos of the progress, and open communication about the project’s progress.
