Norfolk Botanical Gardens Butterfly House | Norfolk, Virginia

Client Profile

Norfolk Botanical Garden serves many purposes for the local community. It’s a place to gather, make memories with family and friends, and learn more about the natural world. The butterfly house is one of their primary education tools for the local community.

The Challenge

While school groups and community members have loved the butterfly garden for over a decade, it wasn’t constructed to last that long. The original design should have been set up and taken down each year–instead, it’s been a permanent fixture for over 12 years. The front and the rear entrances were completely dilapidated and Norfolk Botanical Garden needed a trusted partner to make a more permanent butterfly house.

Searching for a Contractor

The Norfolk Botanical Garden would be built to stay, so it made sense to once again partner with a contractor who understood the value of permanence. Since Norfolk Botanical Garden had contracted Carlton Building Services for their gazebo repairs, they knew exactly who to call for this project.

Replacing Deteriorated Wood

The first order of business was replacing the deteriorated wood and fixing the dilapidated entrances. Our team reinforced the butterfly enclosure with CMU block and replaced the rotting wood.

An Enlarged Space

Another big improvement to the space was building a chrysalis house. By enlarging the space with this new addition, we more than doubled the butterfly house’s size, giving Norfolk Botanical Garden more room to work. Our custom-build chrysalis display case also made it easier for their team to share the wonders of butterfly biology with visitors.

Beloved and Permanent

The butterfly house has always been beloved in the Norfolk community, but now it’s here to stay. Thanks to structural improvements and the high quality building materials we utilized, the butterfly garden can now last twenty to thirty years without more improvements. Not only that, but the new structure is a place to protect monarch butterflies, an endangered species.
