How do commercial contractors define a build out?

Build out is one of the most important terms in the commercial contract industry, yet few people outside the industry know what it means. Today, we wanted to pull back the curtains and clarify once and for all what the term build out means. Check out how an experienced commercial contractors define a build out.

What is a build out?

The term build out is confusing. Based on the name alone, it should refer to a project that…builds out a space. In reality, it refers to everything other than building out a new space. Build out refers to the process of transforming an already built space into an improved space for a new purpose.

JP Carlton, the founder of Carlton Building Services and a contractor with years of experience completing commercial build outs describes how his company views them–and how it might differ from others’ definitions.

“Build outs are a common interior construction process, but we take a different approach, says JP, “Our process starts with a walk through to understand the layout and your vision. We ask questions about why things are in specific locations and take notes on how to transform the space.”

From there, Carlton Building Services considers your purpose for the space and how to not only make the space functional, but inviting and modern. By the end of a Carlton build out, your workspace will excite you, your workers, and clients and customers.

Examples of build outs

Now that we’ve defined a build out, what are examples of commercial construction projects which would fall into this category?

While the types of build outs can vary, here are some of the most common:

Transforming a space for a new purpose, such as changing an old office space so it can work as a doctor’s office
Completing redoing the layout of the space so it’s more functional or better captures a business’ brand

At Carlton Building Services, some of our favorite build out projects include:

When do you need a build out?

If you’re looking to change a space’s purpose or layout, a build out is for you. If you want to repaint the walls or repair small parts of the room, you’re probably better off with a renovation.

When you partner with Carlton Building Services on your build out, you have a contractor who can build the future on your side.
